We need your help to keep the Southern Lights sustainable and thriving!
Below is a list of all the volunteer roles required to maintain our club. These roles vary in size and commitment and many are not currently filled.
Current vacancies
Community coordinator
Working with the club’s social media team, you’ll be helping keep our members and fans up to date with everything Southern Lights.
Duties include:
Scheduling social media content across Southern Lights social media channels
Editing and drafting social media content including copy editing and image/video editing and creation under direction from the social media team
Answering and referring on questions, interacting with others’ posts tagging us and other general social media moderation tasks
No prior experience is necessary however writing/design skills are a plus and you will need to be comfortable using all social media channels.

Many of our dedicated volunteers wear multiple hats while managing their own busy lives. As a result, some valuable activities do not get the attention they deserve. Please consider if you could assist with any of these roles or propose new roles we may not have considered yet. Some roles are formal (such as executive or committee members), while others are more casual.
Your involvement, no matter how small, can make a big difference. Let's work together to ensure the Southern Lights continue to shine brightly!

The president oversees the overall operations and strategic direction of the club. Key responsibilities include:
Leading and facilitating committee meetings.
Representing the club at official functions and events.

Overseeing the health and sustainability of the club.

This role is a key executive position on the committee along with the President, Vice President and Treasurer. Key responsibilities include:
Attending monthly meetings and taking meeting notes.
Maintaining an up-to-date list of club members, updating it monthly.
Editing and monitoring the club website to ensure it remains current and accurate.
Helping coordinate communication between committee members and club members.
Contributing to the strategic planning and direction of the club.

The treasurer manages the financial affairs of the club. Key responsibilities include:
Maintaining accurate financial records.
Preparing and presenting financial reports /summaries to the committee.
Managing the club's budget and ensuring financial stability.
Processing payments and managing receipts.
Overseeing fundraising activities and sponsorships.
Ensuring compliance with financial regulations and policies.
Financial tasks are managed using Xero, and proficiency in basic Excel is necessary for this role.

An ordinary member contributes to the committee and holds voting rights on committee decisions.
Duties include attending committee meetings, general assistance with club matters, handling grievances or complaints and advising on the future direction of the club.
General volunteer roles
Below are ongoing volunteer roles at the club. If you’re not sure exactly what you’d like to do but still want to contribute, please get in touch - from organising to socialising, we can find something that suits your skillset.

This position involves assisting the treasurer and learning about the club's financials from them. The individual should be capable of assisting during busy periods or when the treasurer is not available.
Financial tasks are managed using Xero, and proficiency in basic Excel is necessary for this role.

A Player Wellbeing Manager focuses on supporting the overall mental and physical health of players in the Lights. Key responsibilities include:
Creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all players.
Maintaining contact with coaches and players to monitor player welfare and promptly address concerns.
Providing resources and support for mental health and wellbeing.
Being the first contact point for complaints, following the processes laid out in our constitution.
Following up with players after injuries to ensure documentation is completed.

This role is dedicated to upholding high coaching standards that align with our club's values and team needs. Responsibilities include:
Collaborating with team coaches to ensure consistent coaching methods.
Managing substitute coaches as needed (note: this is not always required).
Coordinating team training sessions (2-3 per season per team).

The role of our Social Media Team is crucial in promoting our club's values and activities. Key responsibilities include:
Maintaining our social media accounts with 2-3 engaging posts per week.
Creating posts to inform the public about hockey, the Southern Lights, LGBTQ+ issues in sports, and club updates and news.
Reducing perceived barriers for new players to become involved in hockey.
Assisting the Secretary with updating and maintaining the website.
Monitoring social media trends to enhance engagement and reach.
Responding to comments and messages to foster a positive online community.
Collaborating with other club members to gather content and news.

Responsible for driving and managing social activities and events for the club. Key responsibilities include:
Planning and coordinating social events and activities for the year (planning ahead is vital due to busy hockey calendars)
Promoting a positive social environment.
Communicating about upcoming events.
Collaborating with other club officials to align social activities with the club's goals.

The Lights have several bags of club-owned gear, including goalie gear and loaner jerseys, that are difficult to manage without a single point of contact. Our ideal equipment manager is someone who:
Keeps track of who has which items,
Lives close to the rink to make pick-ups and drop-offs easy for club members,
Offers a small amount of space (2-3 square meters) to donate to the club to store club equipment,
Communicate with club members to collect or drop off gear, especially at the start and end of the season.

It may sound silly for a club founded in 2019 to have a historian, but so much history gets lost when it remains in people's heads. Our club historian is responsible for helping to preserve and document the club's history and achievements club for the future. Key responsibilities include:
Collecting and maintaining records, photographs, and memorabilia.
Documenting significant events, milestones, and achievements.
Creating and updating a historical archive for the club.

We have one of the coolest logos, and people love showing their pride. If you are head of merchandise, you will:
Help keep our online stock levels accurate
Send out orders,
Create new merchandise lines,
Help make merch available at lights events,
Manage our POS system (Square) and online shop.

A delegate to the national organisation represents the club at the national level. Key responsibilities include:
Attending national meetings.
Communicating national decisions, updates and opportunities to the club.
Advocating for the club's interests and needs at the national level.
Build relationships with representatives from other clubs and the national organisation.
Look for ways the Southern Lights can engage with LGBTQ+ players throughout Australia and around the world.

The Southern Lights require comprehensive IT support to manage multiple email accounts (Outlook/365), websites, and other digital assets. We seek a responsive professional who can:
Manage setup, configuration, and transfer of email accounts.
Assist with minor technical issues, such as password resets and troubleshooting.
Manage domain hosting and ensure website functionality.
Ensure regular backups and data recovery solutions.
Offer guidance to club members on IT-system-related matters (eg security)
Stay informed on anything that might disrupt Souther Lights IT systems.
